What exactly is microcurrent?

Origins of Microcurrent

The use of microcurrent on the face originated in the 1980s when the FDA approved it’s use as a muscle stimulator. Dramatic results were found using microcurrent on patients experiencing Bell’s Palsy, a form of nerve-paralysis which leads to atrophied, sagging facial muscles. It is thought that Bell’s Palsy may result from a virus, usually the herpes virus, which inflames the nerves in the face. Other viruses that have been linked to Bell’s Palsy are the chicken pox and the shingles viruses. Microcurrent therapy uses low-level current to retrain Bell’s Palsy patient’s muscles. This stimulation and re-education of the facial muscles has tremendous application in the esthetics industry!

How Does Microcurrent Work?

Microcurrent stimulates the face by sending gentle waves of energy through the skin, tissues and down into the facial muscles. Microcurrent works by stimulating ATP production in the cells. ATP is the primary energy carrier in all living organisms on earth, and is important in all of the biochemical processes of these organisms. Energy is usually liberated from the ATP molecule to do work in the cell by a reaction that removes one of the phosphate-oxygen groups, leaving adenosine diphosphate (ADP). When the ATP converts to ADP, the ATP is said to be spent. This energy expenditure is the driving force behind the creation of key structural proteins, such as collagen and elastin.

Similar to how exercise energizes the muscles in our bodies, microcurrent increases ATP production which energizes the facial muscles. Unlike in other areas of the body, the facial muscles are directly connected to the skin and energizing these muscles often results in an improved, lifted appearance.

How does Microcurrent do this?

Our entire body is made up of electrical charges that pulse through us. Microcurrent mimics our body’s own natural bioelectrical field and sends tiny electrical currents into our muscles. This current, in turn, recharges the electrical potential of the muscle. There are 43 muscles in the face, and microcurrent can be used to stimulate these muscles to increase lymph flow, circulation and cellular function, as well as promoting hydration and re-educating muscles among other benefits. Microcurrent doesn’t contract the muscle, but instead stimulates it and re-educates the muscle to ‘remind’ it where it used to be. Over time, these muscles begin to resume their plump appearance for an often dramatic, anti-aging effect.

How can microcurrent help your clients?

Microcurrent has many implications in the esthetics field. It can:

  • increase lymph flow
  • increase circulation
  • re-educate muscles
  • promote hydration
  • increase cellular function
  • tone & firm skin
  • lift droopy eyelids
  • reduce dark circles and puffiness
  • diminish the appearance of scars
  • increase the production of collagen and elastin
  • enhance the penetration of active ingredients

I recommend the Myolift Mini or Myolift MD for your esthetic skincare practice. These two machines utilize true microcurrent, which is a pure and clean form of energy that cannot be felt by your client. True microcurrent is relaxing and is not felt; it doesn’t contract or twitch the muscles. It is a very small current that works on the cellular level to rebuild the energy in the skin’s cells. This current stimulates and activates the skin cells, which naturally smooths and softens expression lines & wrinkles. The Myolift Mini and Myolift MD produce electrical signals similar to those that naturally occur when the body is repairing damaged tissue. This electrical signal is proven to stimulate cell growth and rejuvenate aging skin by sending safe, painless impulses to the muscles in your face and neck which re-educates the muscles and restores them.

Microcurrent is a very popular treatment for aging skin. In addition to re-educating muscles, microcurrent triggers your body to increase the production of collagen & elastin, two proteins that make up the framework of your skin. As we age our skin stops producing as much of these proteins, with elastin production being halted in our 30s and collagen production decreasing annually. Stimulating the production of these proteins begins to firm and fill the face, which makes your client look years younger.

Offering microcurrent treatments is a quick and easy way to offer beautiful anti-aging results for your clients! The Myolift Mini offers 2 waveforms to ‘educate’ muscles lax muscles and ‘erase’ tight muscles. This model is perfect when you’re just starting out using microcurrent, and can also be retailed to your clients.

Myolift MD offers 7 clean and pure waveforms that target 7 different layers of the skin, including the lymph nodes for lymphatic drainage. An 8th waveform is iontophoresis (galvanic) for product penetration. It has a touch screen and interface designed specifically for ease of use while you are in the treatment room. This is a ‘professionals only’ device.
